Common Core Ontologies Working Groups
The Common Core Ontologies (CCO) comprise a suite of eleven interoperable ontologies extending from Basic Formal Ontology. Together, they aim to represent and integrate generic classes and relations across domains in a consistent and interoperable manner. This page describes active working groups that support the development, use, and standardization of the Common Core Ontologies.
NCOR Common Core Ontologies Working Group (CCOWG)
The NCOR Common Core Ontologies Working Group focuses on cultivating understanding of, contributing to, and promoting the development of the Common Core Ontologies suite. The group includes academics, students, and professionals with a shared interest in CCO-based domain ontology engineering.
The CCOWG is chaired by Giacomo De Colle and holds weekly hybrid meetings. Discussions regularly include CCO-based projects such as design pattern refinement, alignment with related open-source ontologies, and the development of criteria for what counts as a mid-level ontology or ontology suite. Minutes from past meetings are listed below to provide an overview of topics covered.
If you would like to attend CCOWG meetings either in person or remotely, please contact info@ncornetwork.org.
IEEE Ontology Standards Working Group
The Common Core Ontologies are currently involved in IEEE standards development through two related efforts: IEEE P3195, which defines requirements for mid-level ontologies, and IEEE P3195.1, which focuses specifically on the Common Core Ontologies.
These working groups focus on advancing the standards toward full approval status. Inquiries about participation may be directed to info@ncornetwork.org.
CCO Developers Group
In addition to formal working groups, CCO development is supported by an active Developers Group led by Alexander P. Cox. This group conducts focused development work on ontology content, tooling, and contributor workflows.
Information about participating in the CCO Developers Group, as well as other engagement opportunities, can be obtained by contacting info@ncornetwork.org.
